The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is one of the top public research institutes in Japan, with a large number of researchers conducting cutting-edge research. AIST has delivered outstanding results at various stages, from basic to applied, in a wide range of fields including nanotechnology and materials, biotechnology, information technology, environment, energy, geology, and standards and metrology.
The Institute led by President Dr. Nomakuchi is funded by the Japanese government to a large extent. Headquarters are located in Tsukuba and Tokyo. 

AIST has over 50 autonomous research units in various innovative research fields, and the units are located at 9 research bases and several sites of AIST all over Japan. About 2500 research scientists  and well over 3000 visiting scientists, post doctoral fellows and students are working at AIST. About 700 permanent administrative personnel and many temporary staff supports research works of AIST.

RIKEN is one of Japan's largest research organizations with institutes and centers in locations throughout Japan. It carries out high level experimental and research work in a wide range of fields, including physics, chemistry, medical science, biology, and engineering, covering the entire range from basic research to practical application. RIKEN was first organized in 1917 as a private research foundation, and reorganized in 2003 as an independent administrative institution under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The mission of RIKEN is to conduct comprehensive research in science and technology (excluding only the humanities and social sciences) and to publicly disseminate the results of its scientific research and technological developments.

The Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE) focusses on the preservation of global environment and the development of world economy by the progress of industrial technologies. For this objective, under the collaboration with foreign research institutions, about 250 researchers are addressing R&D and the investigation in the areas of Systems Analysis, ChemistryCO2 Storage, Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology.

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) is Japan's sole Independent Administrative Institution (IAI) specializing in materials science. NIMS is charged with basic research and development of materials science, and to advance the level of expertise in the field.

NIMS and two other institutions located in Tsukuba, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and the University of Tsukuba, have agreed to the aim of creating a world-class nanotechnology research and development center in Tsukuba City in cooperation with industry, and established the Tsukuba Innovation Arena for promoting this project.

The National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) is Japan’s national laboratory for fusion research, pursuing a new type of energy to solve some challenges the contemporary world – a heavy user of energy – is facing. The institute’s LHD (Large Helical Device) is the world's largest stellarator with two superconducting helical coils and six superconducting poloidal (vertical field) coils.

The High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) is one of the world's leading accelerator science research laboratories, using high-energy particle beams and synchrotron light sources to probe the fundamental properties of matter. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, KEK is advancing our understanding of the universe that surrounds us, its mechanisms and their control.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), the national center of astronomical research in Japan, has the most advanced observing facilities in the world. As an inter-university research institute, it promotes the open use of these facilities among researchers throughout Japan and encourages flexible international cooperation. NAOJ aims to promote the development of astronomy, astrophysics, and the related fields of science.

The Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) of University of Tokyo, was established in 1976 for the cosmic ray studies. It owns the world’s biggest subterranean detector for atmospheric neutrinos, the so-called “Super-Kamiokande”.

The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) plays a key role in Japans space research cooperating with Universities. The institute has brought numerous satellites into orbit.
