Research Performing Organisations
Public R&D activities in Japan are organised and financed by different ministries, organisations and administrative units. They set up their own programmes and research institutions. In the fiscal year 2006, there had been 1.022 non-profit and public organisations in the R&D sector (Survey of Research and Development 2007). This number includes 453 non-profit organisations, from which 353 are engaged in natural science and engineering. 500 out of 569 public research institutes are dealing with applied sciences and engineering.
