NEDO and Sharp claim 31.17% efficiency with triple-junction module

Sharp Corp. announced on May 19th that is has achieved a new level of energy efficiency with its PV modules. The module, composed of a triple-junction compound semiconductor photovoltaic (PV), which measures a size of 31 x 31 cm, hit a 31.17% efficiency, which is one of the highest rates under the large-sized modules. This solar module was developed as a part of a project of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Sharp has already achieved an efficiency of 37.9% with a PV module in the past, but this PV cell had only an area of 1.047cm2. The new type is about 1000 times bigger and covers an area of 968cm2. NEDO claimed, that this type could be commercialized well, since it is "lightweight and flexible" in cars.

NEDO set as a goal, to reduce the cost of solar power generation to 7Yen per kWh by 2030.
