Vortrag "Basic Science as Driver for Economy and Society"

Prof. Dr. Peter H. Seeberger, Director of the Max-Planck Institute for Colloids and Surfaces in Potsdam, Germany, Professor at the Free University of Berlin, Potsdam University and The Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research, La Jolla USA, will deliver a lecture on “Basic Science as Driver for Economy and Society” at the German Research and Innovation Forum Tokyo.

The societal and economic impact of basic science and its return on investment are often questioned. In his lecture Professor Seeberger will demonstrate how “blue sky research” can result in scientific and technological breakthroughs that translate into new products and jobs. As an example, the creation of novel vaccines based on synthetic sugars and the production of pharmaceuticals using continuous flow systems will be discussed to illustrate the path from fundamental research to the translation into the market.
