German–Japanese Symposium on Regional Innovation and Cluster Collaborations

Regional innovation systems have become vehicles for global and national competitiveness. As part of these systems, especially clusters and comparable regional networks provide advantages such as research infrastructure, a highly qualified workforce, an innovative culture as well as the commitment to a common innovation strategy.

A number of German initiatives, such as those of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), are encouraging innovative regions worldwide to initiate and expand collaboration with Leading-Edge Clusters, forward-looking projects and comparable networks in Germany. Cluster collaboration between Germany and Japan as equally innovative and technologically advanced nations is particularly promising for pooling the innovative capacities of science and industry.

The degree of collaboration between German and Japanese clusters and networks is increasing in various areas, ranging from photonics and power electronics to biotechnology and sports innovation. Thus, expanding collaborations will further leverage the innovation potential and competitiveness on both sides. The German-Japanese Symposium on “Regional Innovation and Cluster Collaborations” is being organized by the German Research and Innovation Forum Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo) and supported by BMBF. It provides a platform for German and Japanese experts from small, medium-sized and large enterprises, creative start-ups, research institutions and universities to meet and exchange views on regional innovation across disciplinary, sectoral and technological boundaries.

Topics of the symposium will include:
- Best practice
- Initiating and developing collaboration
- Development of new technologies and business ideas
- Internationalization of SME and start-ups
- Technical education and advanced training
